I walked into work one day with my hair freshly dyed. Pink and blue highlights were my colors of choice at the time. My boss took one look at me and said, "So do you think you're 12?". Actually I was 42 at the time. Now I am 43 and I had my third child 4 1/2 months ago. I also decided to join a newly formed roller derby team as soon as my doctor cleared me for physical activity.
"So do you think you're 12?".
The comment from my boss repeats in my head almost on a daily basis now. I continue to dye my hair, purple is my color of choice now, and I have gone from highlights to all over color. I have been practicing for the last 3 months. My body screams at me that I am no longer as young as I once was. I am improving, continuously, at every practice. I am older and slower than most. I am also determined to be just as skilled as everyone else.
I have spent a large portion of today reading the blogs of other women who have chosen to become derby girls. Even though I do not know them, there is a connection, an understanding of what they are going through and how this sport makes them feel. Makes them who they are. It is addictive, as I am finding out. I think about my skates a lot. How to adjust them, improve them, so that I can perform better.
So sign up and follow me on this journey into the world of Derby. It should be a fun and exciting ride.
Hi Nance. I'm pretty new at this, so I'm not sure I should be giving any advice... but i can say that just simply stretching a little in as many areas as I can before the warm up skate really helps me. We skate, then stretch, then skate too. I'd like to follow your blog, but I'm having computer issues... I'll keep checking in anyway :)
